A Research Study on Reading

Read Aloud Research Study Online Interface

A hospital's research team commissioned an online browser-based method for collecting data about parents and how they read aloud to their children. Nurses, physicians, and research administrators needed a simple process that would be easy to learn, and appropriate for the subject matter. The resulting interface uses calming and friendly colors, legible type, and geometric elements.

In addition to forms collecting parent and child information, each entry includes questions that change depending on the age of the child. This accordion-style module allows the administrator to easily go forward and back between sections without needing to excessively scroll or re-send data, and helps them understand their location within the length of the questionnaire.

Each entry results in a PDF report displayed on a page with options like print and share via email. This PDF gives the parent immediate results and recommendations based on how they answered the questionnaire. The right-side chart displays continuous data points as researchers follow children through development, while the left-side list provides an explanation for this entry's data point.

This application is a study in form design. Using shades of color help group content, two typefaces help separate questions from labels, contrasting and centered submit buttons help signal the end of the form, and a contrasting background help add even more clarity to the inputs. These same principles were applied to multiple sections within the application—enroll a new child, search for a child, and the questionnaire itself.
